Bigger is better? No way, say the state's nine smallest ski areas.

"I always says it's sort of an anti-resort experience," says Bob Casey of Ski Cooper. "These places are so much more affordable. You can get around easier. You always know where your kids are. You don't have to juggle a hundred other things."

Branded as the "Gems" by Colorado Ski Country, the nine areas have an apt nickname. These off-the-beaten-path spots shine not because of their glittery amenities or celebrity sightings — a few pride themselves on not knowing if they've ever even hosted one — but their lack thereof.

With one exception — the 6-year-old Echo Mountain — these are some of the oldest resorts. They're also among the most laid-back, least-fussy winter sports experiences. Parking is free, and usually mere steps from the slopes. The staff is relaxed and friendly, because they didn't have to drive four hours from a more affordable locale.
