Bears are back in Aspen

The frustration was evident in Kevin Wright’s voice.

After removing four bears Saturday and Sunday, the wildlife officer with Colorado Parks and Wildlife said he can’t understand residents of Aspen's upper valley either not abiding by trash container ordinances or not locking the doors and windows to residences.

On Saturday, he saw a clear sign that a sow and its two cubs had had access to trash: a plastic bag protruding from the mother bear’s rear end.

“The discouraging point is that lot of bears are getting into trash, in town and in the county,” Wright said. “This just shouldn’t be happening.”

While the bruins’ regular food of choke cherries and acorns are in ample supply, the service berry crop failed this year for unknown reasons, Wright said.
