High country braces for first snowfall of season

The excitement for the first measurable snowfall of the season built Wednesday with each passing mile closer to the mountains on westbound Interstate 70, reaching the peak in ski towns like Silverthorne.

The National Weather Service forecasted an overnight storm could drop from 2 to 6 inches in the high country above 10,000 feet. Light dustings have hit peaks during the summer, but this would be the first real snow of the season.

"Once the cold temperatures start, and the first natural snowfall starts, it gets pretty hectic," said John Sellers, marketing director for Loveland Ski Area.

On Tuesday, snowmaking equipment was fired up for a test run. A new chair lift has been under construction over the summer. But, it's going to need to be colder and drier for longer before the runs will take shape, Sellers said.

Winter Park and Arapahoe Basin also said they are waiting to start making snow. Staff at Winter Park donned T-shirts and shorts Wednesday afternoon while they waited to see if it would snow, spokeswoman Mistalynn Lee said.
