Three female cyclists were struck and two suffered serious injuries Thursday when the driver of an SUV on North Foothills Highway swerved into the shoulder of the oncoming lane of traffic, the Colorado State Patrol said.
The crash occurred at about 8:50 a.m. near Nebo Road, north of Boulder.
Colorado State Patrol spokeswoman Trooper Heather Cobler said the three women, at least two of whom were from Boulder, were riding north on the shoulder of North Foothills Highway, also known as U.S. 36, when the male driver of a Ford Escape heading southbound, toward Boulder, swerved across the oncoming lane into the shoulder, hitting all three cyclists.
Master Trooper S.S. Schwanke, who was at the accident scene, said it appears that another southbound vehicle slowed down to turn right into a private drive, and the driver of the SUV swerved around that vehicle.
North Foothills Highway was closed from Nebo to Lefthand Canyon Drive for nearly two hours as emergency crews dealt with the accident.
At least two of the women were believed to have suffered serious injuries.
