$1-a-day skiing? Now THAT's a deal!

The airfare to get to New Zealand isn't pocket change, but wow, what a deal on lift tickets!

It seems the operators of the Turoa and Whakapapa ski area will get more than they bargained for - and a huge drop in profits - after thousands took up a "Deal of the Day"-type offer on lift tickets.

The deal was targeted to Australians in hopes they would plan a skiing vacay in New Zealand. But the offer wasn't limited to Aussies.

It appears at least 6,000 of the $1-a-day passes were purchased by Kiwis looking for a bargain close to home.

Ruapehu Alpine Lifts general manager Dave Mazey told The Dominion Post that 19,000 vouchers, which normally sell for $95 a day, were snapped up in the livingsocial.com promotion.

The deal allowed you to buy up to four $1 lift tickets for yourself and up to four as gifts.

"We had just over 3000 people purchase a total of 19,000 $1-a-day ski vouchers," Mazey told the Dominion Post.
The website crew thought they could limit the sales to Australian buyers.  "That did not happen," Mazey said.

Ooops.
