How big is too big?
It seems that's the question facing Colorado again, with Breckenridge and Monarch planning expansions. (Heck, every resort probably has plans for expansion, these are just up for public discussion at the moment.)
Breck is one of the busiest ski areas in the country, as this story in the Denver Post points out. Owners want to expand to help accommodate those visitors - and welcome more.
Not everyone thinks that should be allowed.
A plan to ease congestion at Breck by adding some 550 acres of high-alpine and gladed terrain on Peak 6 is harvesting vehement opposition from vocal locals and environmentalists eager to protect not only one of the last pockets of old growth forest in the heavily trafficked region but also a town that swells with visitors every winter weekend.
Rocky Mountain Wild's Rocky Smith asks: "Breckenridge already has four mountains. How many do they need?"
"Should we carve up Douglas fir and spruce forest - that we need right now with all the dead Lodgepole - just so Breckenridge can market another mountain and bring in even more crowds?"
What do YOU think?
