Peter Maksimow sets course record in winning Summer Roundup 12K

By EMILY BAYCI, THE GAZETTE

Peter Maksimow had the course record in mind all morning when he set out for the Summer Roundup Trail Run 12K Sunday at Bear Creek Park.

The 32-year-old from Manitou Springs met his goal by finishing in 44 minutes, 54 seconds -- 26 seconds faster than the previous record of Aaron Rubalcaba-Lopez set in 2007.

“The first half was really fast,” Maksimow said. “The second half I was going for the record. Rather than racing them, I was going for the record.”

The second-place finisher, Justin Ricks, 31, of Pueblo West, also broke the previous course record with a 45:16 finish.

The win puts Maksimow in the lead for the Triple Crown of Running Series. Lisa Goldsmith, of Nederland, is atop the women's field after winning Sunday's race in 54:55.

Goldsmith, 46, did not expect to be in the series lead after posting a slower time in the first race -- the Garden of the Gods 10 Mile Run -- when she helped pace a friend.

“Hopefully this race makes up for it,” she said.

Goldsmith was in second most of the race, trailing Carrie Zografos, 31, of Lakewood. Goldsmith thought Zografos had the race won but eventually overtook her on a downhill.

Men's results ... women's results

Zografos is used to running marathons, and Sunday's 12K was her first trail race in nearly five years.

She was “a little intimidated” by the course, which ran on Bear Creek Regional Trail and High Drive Road. The course was mostly uphill on the way out, with elevation ranging from 6,100 feet to 7,100 feet.

“I’m not the best climber, I’m not the best downhill runner so I have to practice,” Zografos said. “Coming down the steep down and these rolling hills, my legs feel like bricks.”

There were 483 runners, most using the course as training for the final leg of the series, the Pikes Peak Ascent and Marathon in August.

Tommy Manning is right behind Maksimow in the series standings but is not yet registered for either of the final races.

“We’ll just see what happens,” Maksimow said.
