A Woody Creek man pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges related to an accident at the Snowmass Ski Area in March.
Travis Luffman, 22, will be tried on misdemeanor counts of third-degree assault and reckless endangerment. Pitkin County Judge Erin Fernandez-Ely scheduled the jury trial to begin Oct. 21.
Luffman is accused of snowboarding off a blind jump on the Green Cabin run near the Coney Glade ski lift and colliding with a 7-year-old boy on March 12. Members of the victim’s family, who live in Brazil, happened to be videotaping him at the time and turned the footage over to Snowmass Village police. They also allegedly took out their rage on the defendant, who said he was assaulted, though Snowmass Police Chief Art Smythe said at the time that Luffman’s allegations could not be substantiated.
Luffman said his goggles were busted, as was his lip and a ski pole. Smythe said it was unclear if Luffman’s injuries were from the family or were incurred during the collision. Officers cited Luffman for breach of skier duties, a petty offense. The victim was hospitalized overnight.
