Winter X's youngest medalist in history now is one step closer to chasing Olympic gold.
Torin Yater-Wallace, the 15-year-old superpipe phenom from Basalt, spent the entire winter soaring to new heights. Wednesday, he was one of nine athletes named to U.S. Freeskiing's inaugural Halfpipe Pro Team.
He joins a group, selected based on 2010-11 competition results, that includes one of his idols (Simon Dumont) as well as two Aspen Valley Ski and Snowboard Club alums (Jen Hudak and Jess Cumming).
The announcement comes little more than two months after the International Olympic Committee voted to add ski halfpipe to the program at the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia.
“It's awesome to me, but it's also a lot of responsibility,” said Yater-Wallace on Wednesday, when asked about representing his country. “I'm ready to see where it takes me. I can't wait.”
