Powderhorn ski area heads to auction block

MESA, Colo. (AP) —Powderhorn Ski Resort in western Colorado is putting itself up for auction Aug. 4.

There is no minimum bid for the 1,600-acre resort with four ski lifts, a lodge, 16-room inn, mountain operations building, equipment maintenance facility, dry storage building and an administrative building.

Powderhorn CEO and President Steve Bailey and Dean Skalla bought the resort in 1999.

Resort spokeswoman Sarah Allen says the ski area isn't in distress, but Bailey and Skalla thought an auction was the quickest option for finding a new owner as Bailey heads toward retirement.

The resort east of Grand Junction has a dozen full-time employees and about 250 employees in winter.

Allen says the resort doesn't expect customers to notice any changes.

J.P. King Auction Co. is handling the auction.
