Paraplegic skier dies after crash at A-Basin

A paraplegic skier died on Thursday after witnesses saw him crash "very hard" during a run at Arapahoe Basin Ski Area.

The Summit County Coroner's Office said Jack Ward, 51, of Golden was using a "sit ski" when witnesses saw him catch an edge and crash.

The coroner said Ward, who was described as an excellent skier, was unresponsive when he was found.

Ward was celebrating his 25th anniversary of being a paraplegic by skiing A-basin, according to the coroner.

No autopsy was planned, the coroner said, and the scene appeared "consistent with an accidental death."
