(Yes there is a visitors center under that 16 feet of snow in Rocky Mountain National Park.)
Plow crews have been waging an uphill battle in the annual effort to clear Trail Ridge Road, which bisects Rocky Mountain National Park at 12,183 feet. According to a news release from the park, the snow is 10 to 14 feet in places, the most they've seen in years.
Snowpack in the park's basins is 150 percent of average for early May, or more.
Despite this, the park still plans to have the road open by May 27, in time for Memorial Day weekend.
From the Sky-Hi Daily News:
Rocky Mountain National Park's road crew began plowing Trail Ridge Road on April 19, from the east and west sides of the park. Plow operators are reporting significant snow accumulations. Road crews on the east side are reporting 10 to 14 feet of snow between Many Parks Curve and Rainbow Curve, the most seen in this area for years. The recent snowstorms have brought lots of snow.
