Ski resorts take steps to create sustainability on the mountain

With the ski season coming to a close at most of Colorado's ski resorts, Summit County areas are tallying their energy savings and sustainability methods for the season.

From energy conservation in buildings and snowmaking to giving back to the community, Arapahoe Basin Ski Area, Breckenridge Ski Resort, Keystone Resort and Copper Mountain are taking strides where they can.

“We do our best to improve where we can,” Breckenridge spokeswoman Austyn Williams said. “There are some aspects of the business you can't avoid.”

Such as expansions, Breckenridge environmental coordinator Dave November said.

“We try to do the right thing if there is an expansion,” he said, adding that the new One Ski Hill Place is Green Globes certified. At Copper, Woodward at Copper has the same certification.

One of Breckenridge's and Keystone's top efforts is composting. The two, together, have diverted more than 100 tons of organic waste from the landfill this season.

Keystone environmental manager Frank Papandrea calls it a “coopertition” to see which of them can divert more from the landfill.
