Forest Service leads tour of proposed Breck expansion

BRECKENRIDGE — It doesn't look like much now. Just a softly sloping hill covered with snow and a smattering of trees between the ski runs of Peak 7.

But Breckenridge Ski Resort executives and many skiers and snowboarders hope it might someday be the site of a six-person detachable lift capable of carrying 3,000 people an hour to the top of the hotly contested Peak 6 expansion.

The ski resort's hopes to extend to a fifth mountain are on hold now, awaiting release of a draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) from the U.S. Forest Service, which has been repeatedly delayed and is now expected in June.

Breckenridge and the Forest Service used the extra time to give the public a sneak peek at the area where the proposed expansion would be constructed in a site visit Friday morning.

As many as 70 people turned out for the tour and a question-and-answer session beforehand to get a feel for what the completed project would look like. Guides led what seemd to be a somewhat skeptical crowd through key access points and locations marked for new cut terrain.
