The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has levied $17,000 in fines against the Wolf Creek ski area after finding "serious" workplace violations following the death of the area's ski patrol director in an avalanche in November.
The administration, following several months of investigation into the death of longtime patrol director Scott Kay, found three serious violations and gave the family-owned ski area until May 26 to remedy the issues.
First, the administration cited the lack of specific training and protocols for avalanche control work as well as a violation of state law that required Kay to work with another employee when using explosives to mitigate avalanches.
The other two citations involved the lack of handrails on metal stairways in the area's summit house and the fact that Kay was not wearing a helmet when he was swept away and buried while conducting in-bounds avalanche mitigation before the area opened.
