ASPEN — The ski season ended Sunday like it started Nov. 25 on Aspen Mountain — with a heapin' helpin' of powder.
The calendar said April 10 but the mountain was skiing more like Jan. 10. The Aspen Skiing Co. reported 6 inches of snow over the prior 24 hours to start the day Sunday.
Snow continued to come down in spurts during the day. The local-dominated crowd was all smiles and expressions of disbelief that the season was coming to an end while the conditions were so fine.
Skico second-in-command David Perry was among the skiers lamenting the end.
Aspen Highlands remains open for skiers and riders who haven't had their fill. Highlands stays open through Easter Sunday, April 24.
Snowmass closed along with Aspen Mountain Sunday. Buttermilk closed April 3.
