Steamboat Ski Area hosts 31st annual Cardboard Classic

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — One by one, about 25 teams of cardboard craft marauders dumped their corrugated creations into a Dumpster at the base of Steamboat Ski Area on Saturday morning.

Pounds of duct tape and countless hours of labor were cast away after just mere moments of glory during the 31st annual Cardboard Classic.

“There’s a lot of pride that goes into this,” said Sky “Skyphoon” Williams as he tucked his thumbs into his life vest and stuck out his spandex-clad hips at the top of the course.

In 17 hours — and using about one roll of duct tape per hour — Williams and his seven-person team crafted their speed machine, which they dubbed El Boato Loco.

The powerboat included a towrope tower, two cardboard tubes and a pair of cardboard water skis, ridden by Williams.
