Colorado man dies in B.C. ski accident

A 51-year-old Colorado man died in a Calgary hospital Saturday after a skiing accident in Golden, B.C.

The man, whose name has not been released pending notification of next of kin, was not skiing alone when he took on a marked double black diamond run at the Kicking Horse Mountain Resort, said Jordan Petrovics, the ski area’s spokesman.

The run included an exposed cliff and rocks, he said.

The man fell near an area known as the Feuz Bowl at about 2:40 on Friday afternoon. A helicopter airlifted the victim to a local hospital where he was treated for head trauma.

He was later transferred to an unidentified hospital in Calgary, where he died.

“Due to the weather, they did the best they could to get him to the hospital as quickly as possible,” Petrovics said.

The local RCMP, as well as the resort, are investigating.

However, the run remains open to skiers.

“The terrain is still technically open. It’s being inspected, but at this time it’s open as usual,” he said, adding the victim “definitely wasn’t skiing alone,” and that witnesses were present at the time of the accident.

“Our condolences go out to the family,” he said.
