Snowboarder says he was assaulted

When Snowmass Village police forward a case involving an on-hill collision between an Aspen Skiing Co. employee and a 7-year-old boy to the district attorney’s office, it will include the man’s statement that the child’s family assaulted him.

The incident happened at about 2:15 p.m. Saturday on the Green Cabin run, near the base of the Coney Glade chairlift at Snowmass Ski Area. Travis Luffman, 22, of Woody Creek, was snowboarding on a work break when he allegedly caught air off a blind roller and landed right behind the boy before hitting him.

“The collision was probably my fault,” Luffman said Tuesday.  “But I was trying to take care of the kid and the dad assaulted me, along with his friend.  They punched me in the mouth and hit me in the back of the head with a ski pole.”

Village police officers cited only Luffman, for a petty offense of “breach of skier duties.”  He could face a $1,000 fine.
