ASPEN — Five women and one guy, all in their mid- to late-20s. A pink RV. Visits to 27 ski areas in eight days. It sounds like a recipe for MTV's next steamy reality TV show. Instead, it's a fundraising project by a group of friends with strong Aspen ties.
The group has dubbed its effort the Ski Colorado Breast Cancer Awareness Tour. It is raising funds for the Colorado Breast Cancer Coalition and trying to build awareness about breast cancer, especially among younger Colorado residents. Their rallying cry is, “Ski Bumps, Fight Lumps.”
The six friends are all Colorado natives and five of them have lived in Aspen within the past couple of ski seasons, said Alison Friedman, the only current Aspen resident in the group. The other members are Mackenzie Bell, Page Kelley, Jeremy Rubingh, Allie Shafner and Laura Yale.
Friedman said the idea for the fundraiser came about somewhat as a lark.
“We talked about how we would like to ski all the Colorado resorts,” she said. “Then we started asking if we could do it in one week.”
The idle chatter turned into a serious study of the idea. Once it became clear they could pull off the tour, they decided to raise money for breast cancer education, research and advocacy since the disease affects so many families.
So, starting March 13 they will be hitting the slopes in as many as five resorts in one day.
