ASPEN — Rescuers have indefinitely postponed the recovery of a skier who was killed Tuesday in an avalanche outside the boundaries of the Snowmass Ski Area, citing snow conditions and the potential for additional slides.
Authorities have yet to release the name of the 25-year-old man who triggered and died in an avalanche in Sand's Chute, accessed off the Big Burn at Snowmass. A press conference is scheduled at 3 p.m. at the Pitkin County Sheriff's Office in Aspen.
Recovery operations for the deceased skier had been expected to take place Wednesday in the backcountry of East Snowmass Creek, to the west of the ski area boundary, but have been postponed in the interest of rescuer safety, the sheriff's office said.
The victim's body is located at about 10,000 feet, at the base of Sand's Chute, said a sheriff's office press release.
