Skier dies hiking to Highlands Bowl

A 50-year-old man died Tuesday during a hike up the Highlands Bowl area, the Denver Post is reporting.

His name was not released pending notification of next of kin.  The cause of death is under investigation by the Pitkin County Coroner's Office.

Highlands Bowl is an inbounds expert ski run that is not served by a lift in the Aspen Highlands ski area in Pitkin County.  The man was hiking up in order to ski back down, according to the Sheriff's Department

The death is the 12th related to skiing and snowboarding in Colorado this ski season.
