Today's fresh snow, soon to be followed by sunshine and then, likely, cold and snow again -- a pattern we see repeatedly in Colorado -- highlights the need to be aware of avalanches if you're headed into the backcountry.
There appears to be room in an introductory talk / class about Avalanche Safety slated for Thursday, Feb. 17, at REI in Colorado Springs. The class begins at 6:30 and lasts about 90 minutes.
It's worth checking the site for classes now and then. They're informative and usually fill up rather quickly. You can get on a waiting list for a seat at the Feb. 14 class for people interested in learning to snowshoe and a class on learning about GPS and using hand-held GPS devices.
Check out the calendar on our homepage for additional events. Mountain Chalet offers classes as does the Colorado Mountain Club and other groups.
And don't miss the Members Only Garage Sale at REI on Saturday, Feb. 19. No doubt you can find a bargain there. (I bought a backpack "as is" at an REI sale years ago and it held up through tough-going, including 3 years in the bush in Africa. A real deal.)
