Did you have P.E. when you were in school?

Colorado lawmakers are starting work on what could be one of the nation's most expansive requirements for physical activity in schools, according to the Associated Press.

A measure facing its first test Monday would require all elementary school students to receive 30 minutes a day of physical activity — in addition to physical education classes.

House Bill 1069 is up for a hearing before the House Education Committee.  Its chances of passing are excellent; one of the sponsors is chairman of the committee.

Officials in many states have looked for ways to address childhood obesity through increased activity in schools.  The Colorado version would allow field trips, recess and "fitness breaks" to count toward the requirement.

Wow!

We had PE in elementary, middle and high school.  It was required until you were 16.

I'm surprised anyone would ever take PE out of school - if for no other reason than it has to be difficult trying to teach fidgety kids!

Did you have PE when you were in school?

And don't be too quick to say kids have organized sports, so they get plenty of exercise.  Some do, but a lot of kids, even those on organized teams, do not get enough exercise, according to this report on kids and sports.
