Tuesday was more than just another powder day in Steamboat Springs.
With the most recent storm, Steamboat Ski Area has surpassed last season’s snow total. As of this afternoon, the ski area was reporting 11 inches of new snow in the past 24 hours, bringing the season total so far to 263 inches. Last year’s total was 261.75 inches, after consecutive seasons in excess of 400 inches.
“This year has been a phenomenal season as far as snow goes, starting off with a bang with that record November,” Steamboat Ski and Resort Corp. spokeswoman Loryn Kasten said. “Being able to hit that 100-inch mark on Nov. 30 just set us up for a big winter. The fact that the storms that were forecasted for the season have come and dropped plentiful snow was a huge gift to the ski area.
“We’re thrilled that we’re already at 263 inches and it’s the first day of February.”
During the 2008-09 season, when the ski area received a total of 405 inches of snow, it had recorded 250 by Feb. 1, according to figures from Ski Corp. The figures indicated that the year before, the 2007-08 record season of 489 inches, the ski area had recorded 308 inches by Feb. 1.
