World's largest snow sports tradeshow hits Denver

Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper and Denver Mayor Bill Vidal joined tourism and snow sports representatives today, ringing cowbells to kick off the 2011 SnowSports Industries America (SIA) Snow Show, the world’s largest snow sports tradeshow.

The four-day Snow Show, January 27-30 at the Colorado Convention Center, will attract 19,000 snow sport retailers, manufacturers, and decision-makers.  The Show is expected to generate more than $30 million of spending in the metro area.
“This is our second year of an 11-year commitment from the SIA to hold the Snow Show in Denver, and altogether, that is the largest convention booking in Denver’s history,” said Richard Scharf, president & CEO of VISIT DENVER, The Convention & Visitors Bureau.  “This week’s Mile High SnowFest, Jan. 25-30, which started with Big Air and will run through this weekend with special events throughout downtown, is designed to welcome the Snow Show delegates and get local residents involved in the celebration of Denver as a snow sports capital,” Scharf said.

Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper welcomed the SIA Snow Show to Colorado, stating, “Skiing and riding account for approximately $2.6 billion in spending in Colorado every year. Snow is to Colorado what oranges are to Florida.  We want to enlist the 19,000 international delegates at this show to help us brand Colorado as the snow sports capital of the world – a state that welcomes innovation and new investment, offers an unmatched snow sports product, and leads the world in the manufacturing, marketing and sales of snow sports equipment.”

Denver Mayor Vidal stated, “We are thrilled to host the SIA Snow Show and welcome its 19,000 attendees to the Mile High City,” said Mayor Vidal. “Not only will the convention provide our region with a significant economic boost, but it gives us the opportunity to showcase all of the great outdoor activities in Denver and Colorado, as well as our love for our wonderful city and our state.”

SIA Chairmen of the Board Tim Petrick stated, “We are very pleased that once again, the good people of Denver have rolled out the ‘white carpet’ for our industry and we’re excited to be back in town.  As the doors open for the 2011 Snow Show, our industry has a lot to be excited about.  This year, we have an increase of exhibiting companies and attendees registered for the show including 893 brands and over 110 new exhibitors.”

Gary Defrange, president & CEO of Winter Park and Colorado Ski Country USA board member stated:   “In preparation for SIA, we convinced Mother Nature to bring a bunch of snow to the mountains and we’ve got more than 200 inches in some places.  We’re very excited to host the On-snow Demo again at Winter Park. We have 20 lifts running and 134 trails open.”
