Snowmass police seek info on skier incident

THE ASPEN TIMES

SNOWMASS VILLAGE — The Snowmass Village Police Department is asking anyone with knowledge of a skier incident at Snowmass on Tuesday to contact officers.

Thomas Berglund, 77, of Kalamazoo, Mich., died after he struggled to get out of deep snow on the side of the lower Green Cabin trail at Snowmass, according to authorities. He told a passerby who stopped to help him that he had been forced off the slope by a “kid.” It is unknown if that kid was skiing or riding.

Berglund suffered cardiac arrest while the passerby and ski patrol were trying to help him out of the deep powder. He went off the skier's right of lower Green Cabin and ended up in a short, steep section of terrain between the trail and a slopeside residence.

He was taken to Aspen Valley Hospital but efforts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.
