It doesn't matter what Jonathan Vaughters gets under the tree this morning. He's already received the best Christmas present.
The International Cycling Union, pro cycling's governing body, ranked his Boulder-based Team Garmin-Cervelo third in the world going into 2011. Keep in mind Vaughters' cycling team was a continental team, or Division II, just four years ago.
This is a little like Northern Colorado's football team jumping to the FBC and cracking the top 25.
"It sounds like a long and challenging path," Vaughters said over lunch recently. "I'm in the thick of us trying to get us all the way to the top. Honestly, I don't look back a whole lot."
If you're having problems keeping tabs on Colorado's cycling team, don't feel bad. It has had more names than a crook on the lam. In August, it switched bicycle sponsorships from Felt to Cervelo and thus had its fifth name since 2008.
Regardless of what the jersey says, the team hasn't changed. It only got better with the addition of world road champion Thor Hushovd of Norway. Tyler Farrar is starting to beat sprint star Mark Cavendish, and Christian Vande Velde is finally healthy.
