Old-timers turn out to rededicate historic run at Copper Mountain

COPPER MOUNTAIN — There's a certain species of Copper Mountain skier who still remembers the old “F” bubble chair where the Eagle lift is now. They call the runs by the original numbers rather than the names (Main Vein is “24”; Far East is “1,” etc.). And they remember when the mountain was small enough and new enough that all the employees knew one another.
“That first year, everyone just hung out together — it was a family,” recalled Cheri Breeman of Wildernest, who helped start the Belly Button Bakery daycare in Copper's first years.
“Yeah, you came out in a covered wagon, didn't you, Cheri?” said C.J. Julin, now director of Team Summit who was there for Copper Mountain's first season in 1972 as a ski instructor.
On Tuesday, 18 or so long-time Copper skiers and employees gathered on the shortest day of the year for one rather curious purpose: to re-dedicate the shortest run on the hill — “Ralph's Run” — an unofficial trail all of 50 feet long at the junction of the Fairplay (25) and Main Vein runs.
