A storm system that's been socking the high country with snow eased up a bit early Wednesday, providing a bit of a break for skiers heading up to the powder stashes.
Snow was expected to pick up in the mountains mid-afternoon Wednesday and continue through the night. Some mountain-town weather reports declared snow "likely." Others, like Crested Butte, stated the chance of snow was "100 percent."Interstate 70 was open to traffic Wednesday, but the Colorado Department of Transportation warned that some stretches were wet and slushy and other parts were icy.
For road conditions, check the CDOT website or call 511.Everyone headed to the high country is asked to prepare for winter weather, which means packing the car with warm clothing, water, snacks, and blankets. Also, you should fill your gas tank and grab a sack of sand or kitty litter to use for traction if your vehicle gets stuck.
You should charge your cell phone before you head out and, if you have one, take your vehicle cell phone charger.
Heavy snow is expected through Thursday.
