Georgia man 'devastated' after punching girl in the face on beginner slope at Beaver Creek

VAIL — A Georgia father is "devastated" after he punched a teenage girl who collided with his 4-year-old son on a beginner slope Friday at Beaver Creek.

Scott Filler's attorney said the 41-year-old father from Decatur, Ga., didn't know he was lashing out at a 14-year-old girl who, according to police, had veered to avoid another skier when she bumped into the boy.

"This is a horrible situation for everybody involved," said Summit County attorney J.B. Katz, who is representing Filler.

"He just saw somebody run over his 4-year-old son. It was a terrible reaction but certainly not one that was thought through. Had he realized it was another child, he would have reacted differently," Katz said. "He is just devastated."

Filler was charged with misdemeanor child abuse. District Attorney Mark Hurlbert told the Vail Daily a conviction could result in up to two years in county jail.

The girl, a beginner skier from Mexico, required treatment at a local medical clinic for minor injuries. A police statement said Filler "jumped on top of the girl and hit her in the face with his fist."
