Nik Symon loves his job — and this season, so do the athletes who benefit from what he does.
It involves pushing dirt, making snow, and cutting it into a work of art more than a football field long.
Symon is the pipe cutter at Breckenridge Ski Resort, and his skills were put to the test this season to bump the resort's half pipe from 18 feet to 22 feet — competition caliber. The pipe also went from 380 feet “knuckle to knuckle,” or ridable area, to 575 feet in length.

“Before, the kids said our pipe was short,” said Symon, who's in his ninth year as pipe cutter. “Every day, people who come (to Breckenridge) will be able to ride one of the longest pipes in the country.”
“Instead of just getting by, we're trying to be the leaders,” he added.
