From the Dec. 5 Denver Post:
Virginia Symes McMurtry's family members were newspaper social column regulars, but she didn't always follow in their path.
She helped start a ski area and a ski school for the disabled, worked in Labrador, Canada, helping to build hospitals, and learned how to fly.
McMurtry died Oct. 26. She was 94.
McMurtry, a longtime volunteer board member of the Winter Park Resort, not only helped clean the slopes in the summer, but she and others also put their credit on the line to start the ski area, which opened in 1940, said Jerry Groswold, former president and chief executive of Winter Park.
"She made a huge contribution to skiing in Colorado," Groswold said.
