For those runners looking to start the month with a race, there are two quality options at 9 a.m. Saturday.
The Rock Canyon Half Marathon in Pueblo is in its 22nd year, bringing in about 500 runners annually. It begins in the heart of "Steel City" at Pueblo City Park and follows the Arkansas River before turning around at the Pueblo Reservoir.
The course is flat overall, with the exception of one hill near the end. To register, contact Dave Diaz at

. The cost is $30 in advance, or $40 on race day.
Another option is the Jingle Bear 5K Run, located at Palmer Ridge High School in Monument. The race winds across campus on a trail created for a cross country meet in 2009.
Proceeds go toward After Prom 2011 for Palmer Ridge High School, in an effort to prevent students from participating in unsafe activities after the dance. Awards will be given out to the top male and female finishers in their age groups and overall. A kids "fun run" is also available, starting at 9:30am. Registration is available at active.com, with a fee of $23.
