Sun-splashed opening day at Monarch Mountain

SALIDA -- On Black Friday at Monarch Mountain, lines of eager customers began forming shortly before 9 a.m. in anticipation of an opening.

But these patrons cared nothing about securing great deals. No, after seven months away from the slopes, they only wanted to get away from it all and spend a few hours reacquainting themselves with the snow-covered runs of the mountain ski resort.

Sunny skies and virtually no wind greeted hundreds of skiers and snowboarders, making the November day feel a lot like April or May. All of the beginner terrain and several intermediate runs were open, and the conditions were close to ideal to start the season.

For many in attendance, Friday provided their first look at the changes undergone at  Mountain Monarch since the lifts stopped running last spring. Member Charles Newcomb documents the changes in this video.

The ski area boasts 350-plus inches of snow annually and is only a 2-hour drive from Colorado Springs.
