On a clear and sunny Saturday morning, the Dirty 30 Duathlon made its debut.
A steady stream of runners and bikers wove along the steep, winding trails of Bear Creek Regional Park for a 30K race that consisted of a 5K run, a 20K ride and a 5K run.

Nick Starkey and Tracey Thelen, both residents of Colorado Springs, won individual titles as 54 athletes -- some combining into teams -- took part in the event. Taking second place were Nick Ramey and Kimberly Baugh. Starkey competes in numerous local races and Baugh races for the Women's Mountain Biking Association of Colorado Springs.
“It felt good," Starkey said of his first duathlon. "There was beautiful weather, it was a lot of fun. It’s good to see these kinds of events here.”
A similar race was conducted a few years back as a way to promote the opening of Cheyenne Mountain State Park, and organizers Gary Geiser and Jayson Middlemiss were eager to bring the unique format back to the Pikes Peak region.
“Considering we had a great turnout for such a short notice, putting the race together worked out pretty well,” Geiser said. "It’s really nice to see such a great event in the middle of November. There’s a lot of top-end racers who have come out here just to support it."
The winning team consisted of runner Stephanie Abram and mountain biker Shad Schreiner.
“We were just coming out and seeing how fast we could do, and it turned out alright,” Schreiner said.
Added Abram: "I thought it was a lot of fun. … Total domination!”
Proceeds from the race will be divided between Kids on Bikes and Colorado Springs Parks and Rec.
