New spay-neuter program offers dog owners affordable services

For all of you who love your furry friends ... some good news from the Human Society of the Pikes Peak Region.

The Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region (HSPPR) has launched a new donor-subsidized spay-neuter program for cats and dogs, offering high quality spay-neuter surgeries for pet owners throughout the Pikes Peak region. Due to cat and dog overpopulation, the program, which is available to qualifying families, seeks to reduce the number of unwanted animals by offering an affordable, cost-effective alternative for those in financial need.

Here are some facts about the program.

• The new spay-neuter program offers donor-subsidized spay and neuter services to families who fall within the Federal Poverty Guidelines, as well as people who qualify for other government programs such as food stamps, AFDC, unemployment, etc. For income qualifying information, click here
• In addition to income requirements, the following qualifying information applies:
-- Proof of income including a pay stub, W-2, employer verification, income tax statement or government program documentation.
-- Dogs and cats must be at least 8 weeks of age and weigh at least two pounds
-- Proof of current booster vaccination is required.  Pets must receive a vaccination a minimum of two weeks before the surgery.  Vaccinations are available at the HSPPR Surgery Center for pets scheduled for surgery.

• The new spay-neuter program is available to families in financial need offering surgeries at a reduced rate.  For rate information, please click here.

• The Pikes Peak region has an enormous cat overpopulation problem.  Last year alone, the HSPPR took in more than 9,000 cats and kittens.   Few lost cats are ever returned to their families and only 4 out of 10 cats that come to HSPPR are adopted.
• Each year, 11,000 purebred and mixed dogs and puppies come to the shelter as unwanted or lost pets; approximately 8 out of 10 are adopted.

• Spaying or neutering pets prevents unwanted litters and reduces behavioral issues; the practice creates a healthier lifestyle for animals in the community and reduces stress on owners.

• HSPPR shelters more than 23,000 animals each year.  Annually, 9,500 animals are at risk for euthanasia.
