At Breck, opening day is a powder day

There was no "white ribbon of death" at Breckenridge on opening day Friday. In fact, there wasn't any of the exposed brown earth we expect out of opening day, but rather heaps and heaps of powder and 6 inches of new snow.

Other ski resorts have also been reveling in the early-season snowfall, including 22 inches in three days at Wolf Creek and 9 at Copper Mountain.

Check out photos from opening day!

I "had" to be in Breckenridge for work Friday, so I stopped by the hill for a couple hours. They had five lifts and 147 acres open. Energetic skiers could even get some hike-to fresh tracks higher up on Peak 8, where the lifts aren't running yet.

Resort officials say it's the best opening-day conditions ever, and I and every other skier or boarder I spoke with agree. The groomers were nice and slick, with no ice. The non-groomed runs had knee-high bumps for 1 p.m. and there were even some tree areas open.

As you expect on opening days, lift lines were long but not deadly, about 10 minutes. The terrain park was open. The hike-to terrain was popular. And some nice bumps are waiting to be shaved.

Along with Wolf Creek, Copper Mountain and Breckenridge, Arapahoe Basin, Keystone and Loveland ski areas are open for the year, with more opening in the coming weeks.

Here's a photo taken by Wolf Creek.

And Copper:

So for those wondering whether to do any early-season skiing, here's your answer: GO!
