Woman talks about skiing each continent's highest summit

By KIMBERLY NICOLETTI, SUMMIT DAILY NEWS

In her quest to become the first person to ski the highest summits on each of the seven continents, Kit DesLauriers saved the most challenging, and perhaps the best, for last. On Oct. 18, 2006, she skied Mt. Everest, completing her lofty goal.

Her team was the only one climbing Everest at that time of the year — both a blessing and possible curse, if things went wrong.

“While we mostly relished the quiet experience, it also meant that our team had to do all of the work that others often share in the spring, plus we had fairly cold temperatures in October, vs. May,” DesLauriers said. “Not to mention the skiing, as the Lhotse Face is the most difficult pitch that any of us has ever skied.”

And yet, skiing that face was the highlight of her entire summit skiing experience.

Saturday in Breckenridge, she'll share stories and images from her ski descents on the seven summits.
