Today in Out There: meet the volunteer fourteener police

Today's Out There story is about the Colorado Fourteeners Initiative's peak steward program, in which volunteers spend their free time in the summer on Colorado's popular 14,000-foot peaks educating the hordes of hikers about their impacts to the mountains. If you've ever climbed Pikes Peak on a Saturday in July, you know how many people hike these mountains. While the vast majority are conscientious, there are always some who walk on the tundra, poop where they shouldn't, leave trash on the mountain and let their dogs run free to chase wildlife. These volunteers - who are not, the CFI stridently points out, police in any way - try to gently educate people about their activities. Read the story here. There's a training coming up June 12 and 13 in Alma for anyone interested. Get info here.
