Fort Collins cyclists move to ban cell phones in cars

After a cell phone-using motorist killed a 9-year-old girl on a bike in Fort Collins  earlier this month, cyclists hatched a plan to push for a city-wide using-cell phones-while-driving ban, arguing that texting the phone-talking drivers can be fatal to cyclists.  Several attempts to get a state-wide phone ban have failed over the years, however, with more and more people using phones for more and more distracting reasons, this ban could get traction. Fort Collins city council indicated it will take up the plan in January. They've already banned cell phone use by city employees while driving at work. Perhaps requiring hand-free cell phone use, as NYC and 23 European countries do, would be a good first step. That would (at least in theory) eliminate texting (although I'm pretty sure texting while driving is already illegal, and it hasn't stopped anyone.)
