It was a picture-perfect day for running Saturday at Venetucci Farm in Security. Some of the region’s elite runners took advantage of the cool, crisp morning conditions to set more than a dozen records at The Great Pumpkin Race, the culminating event of the Colorado Springs Grand Prix of Running Series.
The race included a 5K, 10K and Little Pumpkin Fun Run for children ages 10 and under, and approximately 600 people ranging in age from 8 to 76 participated in the event.

Pat McGuire, a recent Colorado Springs transplant from Virginia who ran collegiate at Duquesne, set a course record in the men’s 10K with a time of 33 minutes, 53 seconds. The 28-year-old McGuire also established a record for the 20-29 age group. William Dillon of Colorado Springs finished second in 34:58.
“I hadn’t run a race in a while, so I didn’t have any expectations and just wanted to come out and see where I was,” McGuire said. “I’d never really done a race on a farm, so it brought me back to my high school cross country days.”
In the women’s 10K, Elizabeth Watkins of Colorado Springs set a course record at 36:52, the sixth-best time overall. Megan Riepma finished second in 39:45 and was 12th overall.
Cody Hill, a former runner at Western State University, won the men’s 5K with a record time of 17:42. Adolfo Carillo, who set the previous course record of 17:44 a year ago, finished second in 18:14.
“It‘s fun and makes you continually have to change your stride, and it’s a great time of year to run,” the 37-year-old Hill said. “It’s totally different than anything else you’re going to run, because it’s true cross country. It’s a nice change from the road races in town.”
Colorado Springs’ Nancy Hobbs won the women’s 5K with a record time of 22:47, and 16-year-old Morgan Pilgreen of Fountain was second in 23:29.
The series overall champions will be determined in the future after results are confirmed and made official.
