City Council approves Section 16 purchase

By R. SCOTT RAPPOLD, THE GAZETTE

Colorado Springs City Council unanimously approved the purchase of the Section 16 open space southwest of Colorado Springs today, after nearly 40 years of leasing the land from the State Land Board.

The city will pay $4.18 million, including $3.8 million for the land and $321,000 for the land board to agree not to develop the mineral rights, which it will retain.

Because of grants and donations, the cost to the city's Trails, Open Space and Parks program, which uses a sales tax to fund land acquisitions, is $2.9 million.
