Farmers' Almanac predicts 'mild' winter with average precipitation

Skiers and riders will like half of the winter forecast just released by the Farmers' Almanac.

The venerable publication — not to be confused with the Old Farmers' Almanac — said in the edition released Sunday that a large section of the West can expect the winter to be “mild, with average precipitation.”

Average snowfall is something most skiers and riders will settle for, but the mild temperatures are a bit worrisome. Running 22 weeks, the 2010-11 ski season is one of the longest ever at Aspen-Snowmass. Aspen Highlands will remain open until April 24. Mild winter temperatures could make it tough to stay open that long.

The Farmers' Almanac took credit for accurately predicting that February last winter would bring a lot of snowfall and some humdinger blizzards to the eastern half of the country.

“All things considered, when comparisons to last year are made, we believe that, for most, it will turn out to be a ‘kinder and gentler' winter overall,” the Farmers' Almanac website said.
