Take a scenic, grueling bike ride up Pikes Peak on Sunday

One week after Matt Carpenter and Keri Nelson mastered America's Mountain with victories in the Pikes Peak Marathon, cyclists will get the same opportunity.

But instead of the Barr Trail, riders will take on the Pikes Peak Highway.

The inaugural Assault on the Peak, to be held Sunday with between 200 and 500 cyclists, measures 24.5 miles up the mountain and boasts a total ascent of more than 7,700 vertical feet and an average grade of 6.7 percent, making it one of the country’s toughest climbs.

Entry fees are $150 to the summit and $90 to 11,440-foot Glen Cove, just below tree line, and you can enter Sunday morning on-site in Manitou Springs.
