Big Meadows Reservoir is a popular and easily accessible fishing and boating location on the east side of Wolf Creek Pass in Rio Grande National Forest. This campground is adjacent to the reservoir, making it an ideal resting place for anglers and boaters. The campground features 46 sites, which can be reserved at www.recreation.gov for $20 per night, as well as toilets and drinking water. Hikers can take the modest .25-mile loop walk around the lake or embark on a more strenuous excursion to Archuleta Lake in the Weminuche Wilderness.
- Due to the spruce beetle outbreak that has hit the San Juan Mountains, most of the trees around the campground have been removed and there is little shade.
- The lake is stocked with rainbow, brown, and brook trout and has fishing areas that are handicapped-accessible.
- The reservoir has a boat ramp but only smaller, no-wake boats are allowed.
Recommended season(s): Memorial Day weekend - mid-September.
