The Area

Located along the banks of the Conejos River as it spills out of the South San Juan Mountains, this quiet campground is a great place to pitch a roadside tent or spend a weekend fishing the Gold Medal trout waters of the Conejos. The lightly-used campground consists of 32 sites, seven of which can accommodate RVs. Loops A and B offer lightly-wooded campsites above the river while the sites in Loop C are closer to the river and more heavily wooded. The campground is right along Colorado Highway 17 between Antonito, Colorado and Chama, New Mexico, but the pleasant din of the river covers up any road noise. The campground has toilets and drinking water and costs $20 per night.

Pro Tips

  • Reservations are not usually needed but can be made up to six months in advance.
  • Anglers will find Gold Medal trout fishing a quarter-mile upstream from the campground.
  • No camping trip to this part of Colorado would be complete without a ride on the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad, which makes a 64-mile journey through the mountains between Antonito and Chama. The railroad does not run in winter.

Recommended season(s): Memorial Day weekend - mid-September.
