| Runners flock to Discovery Canyon for ThunderStorm 5K |

Mark VanderMeer cruised to victory Saturday morning in the sixth annual ThunderStorm 5K. The Colorado Springs resident finished the 3.1-mile race on the Discovery Canyon Campus in 17 minutes, 11 seconds. The 26-year-old won by more than 45 seconds as Gerald Romero, 40, took second in 17:57. Michael Stephens, 28, was third in 19:42. Check out photos from the race! Lori Stich, 41, of Colorado Springs controlled the women's race, winning with a time of 20:00. Kaleen Fry, 44, was the runner-up in 24:23 while Hannah Millsap finished third in 25:02. A total of 308 runners took part in the fundraiser for the counseling department, athletic boosters and student scholarships at DCC. More than half the field were school-aged participants. The race route was on-campus, with a double loop around the school, and featuerd dirt trails, sidewalks and paved surfaces. |
