Colorado wildlife officials are on a mission to bring more elk hunters to the state.

The Division of Wildlife gets much of its revenue from hunting and fishing licenses, but the number of elk licenses sold in Colorado dropped by more than 37,000 from 2005 to 2009, with revenue falling by roughly $8 million in that time.

This week, the division is launching a nationwide marketing campaign with a new website, print ads in hunting magazines and television ads on two cable channels to draw elk hunters.

Division of Wildlife marketing specialist Debbie Lininger said Monday she hopes the campaign leads to sales of 4,000 more licenses this year.

Division Director Tom Remington says the greater goal is getting more people to enjoy the outdoors again, whatever the activity.
