If winter blues have got you down, try this destination idea. Although well known by locals as a scenic area with 9k ft. peaks, aspen lined creeks, boulder strewn canyons and miles of trails and roads, the Mt. Herman area is little known and unexplored by many. Mt. Herman is a peak visible from much of El Paso county and located on the eastern edge of the Pike National Forest west of the towns of Monument and Palmer Lake, CO. The area is easily accessible via I-25 and Monument-Woodmoor exit-161. Getting There From interstate 25, exit on Monument-Palmer Lake-Woodmoor exit 161. Procede west into town. At the intersection of CO Hwy-105 and 2nd Street, head west on 2nd Street. At the intersection of Mitchell Ave and 2nd Street, take a left. Next, Mt. Herman Rd. will be on the right. After several miles the pavement ends, and the Pike national forest begins. Hiking Trails Mt Herman Trail - A relatively steep but short hike, the trailhead for Trail 716 is located on the outside bend of Mt. Herman Rd, approx. 6 miles from Monument.
